Session Description

By virtue of our work with Human Rights Defenders (HRDs) at risk and communities in resistance, digital security trainers face a wide variety of potential threats to our security and well-being, as well as that of the (often diverse) communities we train and support. In the second session on holistic security, we will aim to help digital security trainers demystify "risk analysis" and security planning from a holistic security perspective. We will begin from understanding the need for carrying out "risk analysis" and creating security strategies, which arises in the context of attempts by our adversaries, or those of the communities we seek to support and protect, to narrow or close our space for work, or activism, or even expression and enjoyment of our personal lives. We will then identify three key strategies from which we can draw tools and tactics to maintain or expand this space for supporting the communities we work with and maintaining our own well-being in action. We will encourage trainers to begin from their own experiences of risk and security, identify and explore a series of steps which they can follow in order to analyse their context in a complete fashion, identify and analyse the threats they face, and the best means of either preventing these threats from taking place or responding to them. Our analysis of “risk” will go beyond narrow calculations related to physical or digital security but will also include longer-term threats to wour well-being, as well as intersectional and gender-based violence (online and offline). Furthermore, we will take account of the challenges to our “objectivity” in carrying out risk analyses and ways that we can check our perceptions. Finally, we will look at some key details for creating and implementing effective security plans, and skill-share on practical tactics for staying safe in particular situations (according to what participants, in the moment, are interested in learning or teaching)
